Pitching journalists is one way to get yourself in the news, but how do you leg out staying relevant over and over once your initial take is done?

Here are some quick tips:

✅ Be knowledgeable in your area of expertise first and foremost. Being an expert in something is a baseline requirement for getting yourself in the news.

✅ Have an angle. Nobody wants to tell a story without a “so what” factor. What’s the thing about your story that makes a media outlet give it a full send? Always be thinking in terms of the audience going “so what?” and being able to defend that question with the answer.

✅ Be prepared to be on camera quickly. Speed kills in any industry, and with the media, it is one of the most important things for you to deliver - your availability to go live when they say when.

✅ Giving a hot, fresh, and original take. When you’re in the news, it isn’t the time to give a generic answer. Most of the time they want a fresh take and an original thought. They will keep coming back to you if you give them those things.

✅ Have witnesses and contacts ready to corroborate your story. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been able to get a story in the news because I had a witness or a real life example of someone living what I was describing.. Having local and national contacts in your pocket ready to back you up is crucial with some news stories. Be ready to provide them.
